Trish Clausen en Max Getzel duikt al sinds 1982
geregeld samen op. Eerst nog in de ska band The
Eccentrics, later in Price Of Passion en sedert
’91 in Urban Twang. Met deze laatste vanuit
Chicago opererende groep zijn ze inmiddels aan hun
derde cd toe. Eerder verschenen immers al “Nothing
You Can Do” en “Go Call Delia”.
Met “Vintage” staan ze borg voor een
geslaagde rootsplaat. Hun Americana profiteert ten
volle van de erg emotionele voordracht van Clausen.
Zoals in het knappe openingsnummer "Mistaken”
of in het lekker wegtwangende “Better Days”
bijvoorbeeld. Trish Clausen beschikt over een stel
pipes dat je niet zo snel weer vergeet… Wij
dachten bij het beluisteren van “Vintage”
beurtelings aan Neko Case en Nathalie Merchant –
met een lichte voorkeur voor de eerste van die twee.
Andere in het oog springende nummers zijn het Iers
aandoende “I Look Good In Black”, de
luchtige country van “Pink To Blue”,
het naakte “Acquiescence” en de melodieuze
Americanadeun “Everything”. Het absolute
hoogtepunt is het ingetogen “Things I Left
Unsaid”, waarin de aandacht eerlijk verdeeld
wordt over die fameuze vocalen en de mandoline van
Getzel. Op de website van de band lazen we: “Hard
to classify? Try Americana, Roots, AAA, or just
Damn Good Songs.” Het klinkt allemaal wat
breedsprakerig misschien, maar er valt absoluut
iets voor te zeggen… Enkel de jazzy instrumentale
vertolking van het ondertussen al duizendmaal doodgeknuffelde
“Amazing Grace” waarmee het album wordt
afgesloten, had wat ons betreft achterwege mogen
blijven.

Musically
the band keeps it simple and relies more on knowing
how to play their instruments than on flashy production.
For the most part the band delivers a quiet but
driving acoustic style that is not like (but not
unlike) Sheryl Crow, Nickel Creek, and Jan Krist.
The band does liven it up a bit here and there with
the Celtic pop sounding "I Look Good In Black"
and the bluesy rock of "Something More".
All
in all this is a pretty good CD with very few below
average moments. "Vintage" has a very
timeless feel throughout that will surely keep you
coming back time and again.

Clausen’s emotive vocals give Urban Twang
an advantage over many of the male-led insurgent
country bands, providing the songs with an abundance
of down-home big-city warmth. Standout tracks include
“Better Days,” the reel of “I
Look Good In Black,” the stripped down “Acquiescence”
(which reminded me of vintage Everything But The
Girl), Clausen’s Neko Case-like belt on “Something
More,” and the twirling two-step of “Pink
To Blue.”
