Simply
Being Cleopatra was released to a sell-out crowd
at The Abbey Pub on October 14, 2000.
The
all-star ANTJE band included
regulars Lance Helgeson, Joshua Piet, and Kevin
Skomsvold, as well as bonus musicians Jimmy DeLauriea,
Summer Chance, Ellen Miller, and Karen Anderson
(who also performed a stellar opening set with her
band). Oh, and of course, Antje was there too.
"Deceptively
simple songs like ['Drowing Sand'] are the most
rewarding paybacks of "Cleopatra." With a wickedly
pristine voice until it soars wide and far, Antje
can play the duped fool, but... she's more crazy
like a fox."

sounds] something like Kate Bush doing Janis Joplin"

"Every
song is revealing and fascinating.
And there's no stopping Antje's musical exploration."

"Antje
appears to have completely annihilated the sophomore
slump in an album unified by steady rhythms
and streaming vocals."

Here
are some comments about the show and the album
from now die-hard ANTJE fans:
"I
very much enjoyed your performance. The band was
tight, the music compelling, and the lyrics were
edgy as all hell. I like a broad with attitude,
and you Ms. thing are attitudinal. My lady friend,
remarked that she liked the fact that you didn't
smile unless you were zingin' somebody. Oh my."
"The
tone of the recordings is wonderful-laid back and
confident. Bold, yet a degree of humility and wit.
Without sounding corny, these traits are a direct
reflection of your interesting and delightful personality."
"I
can't tell you how impressed I was by you and your
band. I have not stopped talking about it. Hope
you believe it went well (yeah, uh, it did)."
"I
didn't know what to expect.
But you really are more like Patti Smith than Jewel."
"Oh
my god! You in those snakeskin pants holding that
electric guitar. Wow!"
