Big
Open Sky was officially released in
October 1998 with a concert release at the
Old Town School of Folk Music in March 1999.
ANTJE
performed with her then trio: Joshua Piet on upright
and electric bass, Lance Helgeson on drums, and
herself on vocals and guitar. The album itself includes
guest tracks by Caitlin Strokosch (cello), Jamie
Fillmore (guitar), Matthew Weber (pedal steel),
Gary Strokosch (accordion), Jimmy DeLaureia (keyboard),
and Paul Morbeck (bass).
"[Antje's
songs] mine a field between classic '70s folkies
and their slightly edgier '90s offspring."
- Jim DeRogatis, The Chicago Sun-Times
"Looking
for that perfect Sunday morning record? [Big Open
Sky] could be retitled 'The Freewheeling Antje Gehrken.'"
- Mark Guarino, The Daily Herald
"With
an undeniably beautiful voice, Antje breathes her
smoky music straight to the center of your soul."
- Songwriter's Monthly
"…an
acoustic artist with a signature sound. Her vocals
are clear, and are highlighted by intense lyrics.
"
- Alex Teitz, Femmusic.com
"[Big
Open Sky is] a truly acoustic feeling CD chock full
of beautifully simple melodies and some fine guitar
work"
- Karen E. Reynolds, Writer's Block, WDVX,
Clinton, TN
